Nine Snippets from 'Poldark' at the BFI & Radio Times Festival
Ross Poldark: Old-fashioned Hero for a Modern World at the BFI & Radio Times Festival was very much a celebration of Poldark and its lead actor Aidan Turner. Well, what's not to like? This meant that much of the discussion covered the now-familiar tales of how Poldark came to be made, how Debbie Horsfield came to adapt it and how Aidan Turner got the part of Ross. And, of course, the scything scene.
Here are a few snippets from the day:
- It's official! Series Four has been commissioned and will start filming in September. Aidan had dropped a heavy hint about this in his recent interview with Dave Fanning but it's always nice to have it confirmed.
- Series Three will air in June. Damien Timmer explained that they wanted to keep the show's momentum going, having felt the gap between series one and two was just too long.
- Aidan broke his hand filming series three. From his gestures he seemed to indicate it was his left hand.
- Back in 2015 at the preview screening of Poldark, Aidan teased Eleanor about Garrick not being 'amazing'. We know Aidan is a dog person, so it was interesting to hear him expand on this saying, "He’s a working dog and when he’s on set he’s working but he’s not terribly affectionate and it kind of annoys me that he’s not. He doesn’t want to know you unless you have a treat in your hand and I just don't have time for that!"
- Aidan's favourite scene is when he and Demelza first kiss in what he calls 'the blue dress scene'. He said there was a great energy on the day they were shooting it and, 'It just felt right, it felt real. It works for me!'
- Aidan's comment that he doesn't think people like his beard was met with noises of approval for it from much of the audience.
- Asked about the paparazzi and, in particular, about a documentary on Channel 4 where a certain member of the paparazzi admitted to making up stories, Aidan said, "It's frustrating when it holds up the shoot and when there are things we are trying to keep private in the show. I don't know if anybody takes these stories seriously but when he says I'm pushing people around - he fabricates the whole thing, which is kind of shocking. But as long as he doesn't get in my way I don't care." Debbie added that the fans are brilliant and are never a problem.
- Asked how he gets rid of his Irish accent for the show Aidan joked "Loads of talent." Debbie added, "There's this marvelous thing called ADR."
- Aidan's favourite British painter right now is Harland Miller, known for his paintings of vintage Penguin book covers.

'Poldark' Series 3 UK and US Air Dates!
Poldark will be back on UK television in June!
The Radio Times announced its return and Official Poldark confirmed the news with this tweet, although the actual date is yet to be revealed.
Fans in the US will have to wait a little longer to see series three, however. Masterpiece PBS give the premiere date Stateside as 1 October.
And what news of Series 4? Although it has not been announced Aidan Turner, in his recent interview with Dave Fanning, dropped strong hints of a September start for S4 - should it go ahead. Series 1, 2 and 3 all had four months pre-production prior to the start of filming. On that basis S4 will need to start in May. Let's hope for some news soon!

Three Things You Want to Know About 'Poldark' at BFI & Radio Times Festival
Photo: Ellis Parrinder |
With just days to go to the BFI and Radio Times Television Festival's Ross Poldark: Old-fashioned Hero for a Modern World, we ask Press Officer Liz Parkinson some of your questions about the event.
Poldarked: Will there be a chance for the audience to ask questions during the discussion?
Liz Parkinson: I have been told there will be a short Q&A at the end yes. Probably ten to fifteen minutes max.
P: Will there be an organised opportunity for fans to meet Aidan Turner for a picture or autograph?
LP: Aidan won't be doing any pre-organised meet and greet, no.
P: Will the event be videoed so people who can't come to the Festival can see it at a later date?
LP: We have requested permission to film which is pending. If we get the go-ahead it will go online within about a week.
Liz will let Poldarked know either way about filming the panel so be sure to check back here.
UPDATE 3 April 2.10 pm: Liz has let me know that, sadly, the event will not be videoed.
Ross Poldark: Old-fashioned Hero for a Modern World is 3.15 to 4.15pm on Saturday 8 April at the BFI IMAX, London. Aidan Turner (Ross Poldark) along with screenwriter Debbie Horsfield and executive producer Damien Timmer will talk about the show to Radio Times' TV Editor Alison Graham. A full programme of events can be found here.
We can't wait!
