iPlayer figures for 'Poldark' S2

Series Two of Poldark got off to a terrific start on BBC iPlayer with over 1.25 million requests for episode one, beating the premiere of Series One by 64,000!  The only episode across both seasons to receive more requests is number five of Series One with over 1.4 million (it aired Easter Sunday).

Poldark went head to head with ITV's Victoria for its first six episodes but Victoria premiered in August so, by the time Poldark aired, Victoria was on its third episode. This may, in part, have affected the number of iPlayer requests for the Poldark premiere, with some people choosing to watch Victoria live and Poldark on demand.

The iPlayer report focuses on the top twenty episodes and the most requested episode per programme for each month. Poldark appears in the report for episodes one, five and ten. One and ten are the premiere and finale. Five gives us the death of Francis and also Ross in the bath tub. At the time five aired it was the least watched episode of the series, with viewing figures of 5.95m (seven day consolidated). It may be that many people caught up with it later, helping to make five the most popular episode of Poldark on iplayer in October, with 872k requests.

Poldark Series Two finished with the good overnight viewing figure of 5.8m (6.9m seven day consolidated) taking it back to the levels seen for Series One. It's hardly surprising then, that the number of requests on iPlayer were more modest at 697k. Nevertheless, it was the twelfth most requested programme in November.

Here are the tables which should be read alongside the Notes and Glossary:

All The Fun of the Fight

The second series of Poldark has its fair share of fights and fisticuffs with Ross (Aidan Turner), George Warleggan (Jack Farthing) and even Dr. Dwight Enys (Luke Norris) seeing a bit of action.

Aidan has had plenty of fight training over the years as many of his screen roles have involved a brawl or battle somewhere along the way. Making Desperate Romantics in 2009, Aidan said he found the scene where he's involved in a punch-up 'scary', but he sees things differently now on Poldark. ‘I really enjoy the fight scenes, they are so much fun,' he says, 'George is working out, he’s boxing and training so he is well able to handle himself these days which makes the fight more interesting. He’s quite vicious in some of these fights. There’s a lot of strangling and throwing ourselves into bookcases, and smashing glass. I put his head into a fire at one stage! Jack (Farthing) is a lovely guy, that’s probably why I enjoy the fight scenes so much because I really like him. He is such a brilliant actor, and I have learnt so much from him.’

And it seems Jack Farthing who plays George has been preparing himself for a scrap. As Jack reveals, ‘George persuades himself that the thing to do is to try and become more
Photo: Official Poldark
of a physical match for Ross, not that he ever really will. To present himself as a different kind of man, not all curlers and frills, he decides to build himself up and starts training. We did some 18th Century boxing, which is very different to modern boxing, it’s all sort of long arm and at a distance. It looks quite funny and a little pathetic…

‘I had a great day with an amazing stuntman who had literally just stepped off the Bond film the day before - he was an absolute tank! George may not be made of muscles but if he puts his mind to something it will be right. That’s what I wanted to aim for. By the end he is a real match for his instructor. That was really good fun.’

Luke Norris as Dwight Enys also gets involved in the fights and, for Luke, this is a reminder of earlier times. ‘About six years ago I got hit in a stage fight and it has left a permanent scar on my face so I am always a bit wary about the fight scenes,' he says, 'I was doing this play for six weeks and we went out on stage one time and instead of aiming to miss the guy had a brain burp and clobbered me straight in the mouth. I’m properly cautious now.’ But Dwight is a loyal friend of Ross's and is always there for him. As Luke says, 'Dwight’s definitely a corner man in the fight. Ross is the boxer and Dwight is the man patching him up.’

Well I'm really glad Dwight is there to look after Ross and, while I'm flinching at Ross being hit at least I can now tell myself that this is Aidan's idea of fun!

BAFTA Win for 'Poldark'!

Bravo!
Poldark has won the BAFTA Radio Times Audience Award 2016!

The House of Fraser British Television Awards ceremony was held on Sunday and Poldark beat off the competition from The Great British Bake Off, Making a Murderer, Doctor Foster, Peter Kay's Car Share and Humans  to win the only BAFTA voted for by the public: The Radio Times Audience Award.

Cast members Aidan Turner, Eleanor Tomlinson, Heida Reed, Ruby Bentall, Luke Norris and Kyle Soller went on stage to collect the award along with writer Debbie Horsfield and executive producers Karen Thrussell and Damien Timmer. It was presented by Martin Freeman, Aidan's co-star in The Hobbit.

Aidan began his acceptance speech by thanking the fans saying, '...you're incredibly supportive and loyal and we wouldn't be anywhere without you,'  which was terrific to hear for all of us who voted and got all our family and friends to vote too!

Fittingly for an evening celebrating the best of British television, there were calls throughout the ceremony to defend the independence of the BBC, in this week in which the government publishes its white paper on the BBC's future. Asked about it in an interview Damien Timmer commented, 'The BBC is our creative oxygen in this country...and we love it to death.'

Many congratulations to all the cast and crew involved in making Poldark: we're so proud of what you've achieved.

"And Then There Were None" Titbits

And Then There Were None promises to be one of the best shows on TV this Christmas. The popular Agatha Christie novel, adapted for TV by Sarah Phelps, boasts a stellar cast that includes Charles Dance, Sam Neill and, of course, Aidan Turner. Talking about ATTWN to Worldscreen Joel Denton of A+E Networks says,  “I’m very excited about it. It’s very dark, very mysterious, and it offers a contemporary take even if it’s in period. The way it’s written is very different. It really brings Agatha Christie to a new audience and [presents the material] in a new way.”

Glimpses of  Aidan as Philip Lombard in recent BBC Drama trailers have certainly caught our attention, but there are other Poldark connections to ATTWN too!

  • ATTWN was filmed in Cornwall.  Shooting was spotted at Holywell Bay, Mullion Cove and Kynance Cove during the summer.
  • Mammoth Screen are the production company for both dramas with Damien Timmer and Karen Thrussell the executive producers.
  • ATTWN's line producer  Roopesh Parekh  is co-producer on Poldark Series 2. Roopesh's other credits include the second series of  BBC's  The Hollow Crown. In addition, crew members Gareth Bull (sound), Sophie Kenny (runner) and Victoria Bate (editor) work on both shows

Here's a little look behind the scenes.

10 Episodes for Season 2 of 'Poldark'

Photo: BBC

Aidan Turner has revealed there will be ten episodes in Season 2 of Poldark.

In an interview with the  Huffington Post  Aidan says of filming : 'We're going to start September, I think first week of September, something like that, or second week of September. I think we run until ... I think we go until like the first week in April. We've two extra episodes this season, which is amazing. The shoot is probably seven and a half months or something like that. A bit longer than last year. But looking forward to it, can't wait to get back there. I love shooting the show, I love Cornwall, and adore everyone in the show, so it'll be fun.'

The BBC originally planned six episodes for the first series of Poldark but had increased this to eight by the time filming started.  The news that there will be 10 episodes in the second season will delight the drama's many fans.

'Poldark' Popular on iPlayer in April

Photo: Mike Alsford

Poldark is at No.2 and 3 in the top 20 requested programmes on iplayer for April 2015!

The BBC figures show that episode 5 and 6 got 1,449,000 and 1,068,000 requests respectively. The only show to get more was Peter Kay's Car Share with 1,495,000.  Poldark's episode 7 was also in the top 20 at number 13 with 940,000 requests.

The figures for episode 5 of Poldark on iplayer beat those for episode 1 (1,192,000) although the BBC did not capture all the data in March. This may be accounted for by episode 5 being shown on Easter Sunday, as the consolidated viewing figures of 6.95m for the episode, showed a drop in viewing compared to the episodes in the weeks before and after. As one would expect, people who missed the drama on the Sunday, caught up on iplayer.

Here is the BBC iplayer Top 20. Please also see the following notes:

Poldark Episode 5 Preview

Ross (Aidan Turner) and Demelza welcome two new arrivals: Dwight Enys (Luke Norris), a doctor who plans to make a study of lung diseases at Wheal Leisure and their own baby daughter, Julia Grace Poldark.

At Julia’s christening, Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) resolves to lift Verity’s spirits by reconciling her with her lost love Captain Blamey (Richard Harrington).

Meanwhile, Mark Daniel (Matthew Wilson) has fallen in love with the capricious Keren (Sabrina Bartlett), who demands he find her a home before they are married. Ross helps Mark renovate one of his dilapidated cottages.

Ross sets about forming an alliance with other mine owners to build their own smelting company and break the Warleggan stranglehold that is driving copper prices ever lower. However, as Francis (Kyle Soller) is deeply in debt to George (Jack Farthing), he cannot join the venture. Deeply unhappy with his marriage to Elizabeth, Francis is spending what money he has left on lavish gifts for an ambitious prostitute, Margaret (Crystal Leaity).

Francis also secures Ross an invitation to George’s house party, a seedy affair of drinking, gaming and whoring. With Ross at the party, Demelza lures Verity (Ruby Bentall) into a trap designed to reconcile her with Captain Blamey.

Dwight Enys (Luke Norris)
New characters to look out for in this episode are Dr Dwight Enys (Luke Norris) and Keren Daniel (Sabrina Bartlett).  We'll also meet Richard Tonkin (Rory Wilton) and Matthew Sanson (Jason Thorpe).

This BBC trailer for Poldark is a montage of what has already passed in Poldark and what is still to come.   Some spoilers obviously.
